Remember the days when people wrote letters and talked on the home phone to communicate? Well, sadly those days are gone. The Internet changed everything. Now, not only can you have the Internet in your pocket without dial up (I don’t miss that though) but you can post, share, and like whatever you want. So now that social media had been around for a while, how is it turning out? Is social media a positive thing in today’s society or are we all doomed? I typed “social media is,” into Google search and these were some of the results I found.

Social media is….

Bad

Well, let's start with the ways social media can be bad:

1. Social media gets a bad wrap because it can distract and hinder productivity. Hold on...I’m checking Facebook...nope nothing new from five minutes ago. Anyways, wait, what was I talking about again? Oh yes...

2. Social media has created cyberbullying, which created a whole new way for kids to get picked on. CNN recently reported that one in five teens say that social media makes them more confident, but what about the other four?

3. Another downside to this type of communication is there is no face to face interaction which results in less meaningful interactions and relationships. Steven Strogatz, who is a social media expert and a professor at Cornell University, reports that social media makes distinguishing close friends from acquaintances tough. So, maybe you really don’t know who your BFFs are.

4. There is the issue of privacy. Social media platforms allow people to post anything and everything about their lives. This makes it very easy to creep and stalk anyone. Once something is posted, like a picture, it is there forever and can be taken by someone else.

5. Using these sites can also lead to feelings of social isolation, depression, and loss of confidence.

Social media is….

Bullsh*t

"Social Media is Bullsh*t" is actually a book written by B.J. Mendelson. His book talks about his belief that social media marketing only works for huge multi-million dollar companies and therefore all marketing consultants are scammers. Mendelson points finger at other supposed bull crap artists too, like authors Malcolm Gladwell and Seth Godin. So if you want to read more about his extreme view of the social media marketing world, go ahead and get his book, it is available on Amazon.

Social media is….

Good

Social media definitely has some pros. The most obvious is that it has brought people together from all over the world. Your awkward relatives and exes are only a click away whether you like it or not.

Social media has also become a huge news outlet. These sites can spread breaking news and gossip faster than ever, which puts the latest at your fingertips. Social media has also been known for initiating change. People can hear about things happening and come together to make a difference, which can be as easy as changing a profile picture for a cause. Businesses and consumers use social media to interact which results in better sales and customer satisfaction.

Social media is….

Bad for Society

So is our civilization screwed? After looking this result up, it seems social media is a double-edged sword: it is great to have, but you can have too much. People are always on their phones thinking they are connected, but in reality, they are disconnected from what is around them. This hyper communication could be harmful to our society by increasing stress and dependence on things that really don’t matter much. It is crucial to be aware of the ways that social media affects society and it’s people. If we don’t learn how to control it now, perhaps it will take over the universe!
